To reach an address in the lower 48 states before December 25, 2026, ship USPS Ground Advantage and First Class Mail by Thursday, December 17, Priority Mail by Friday, December 18, and Priority Mail Express by Saturday, December 19. International packages and military APO/FPO/DPO mail close much earlier, starting as soon as Wednesday, November 4.
Those are the dates USPS published on its official 2026 holiday shipping page. But for a business, the carrier's last day is not your last day. Your real deadline is the date an order has to be packed, labeled, and scanned into the USPS network. Miss that and you are refunding a customer, upgrading postage at your own expense, or answering "where is my order" emails on Christmas Eve.
This guide gives you every 2026 USPS cutoff in one place, shows you how to work backward to a store cutoff your customers can trust, and covers what to do when holiday packages still show up late.
One calendar note for 2026: Hanukkah runs early this year, December 4 to December 12. If your customers celebrate, plan those promotions and send dates roughly two weeks ahead of your Christmas schedule.
These are the USPS recommended send by dates for expected delivery before December 25, 2026, inside the contiguous United States.

True last minute orders where speed matters more than margin |
The gap between the cheapest and fastest option is only two days. That matters for margin: every order you push past December 17 is an order that likely ships on pricier Priority or Express postage. The more orders you get out the door on Ground Advantage, the less your holiday shipping eats into profit.

First Class Mail, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express keep the same dates as the lower 48: Dec. 17, Dec. 18 and Dec. 19. Ground Advantage is the exception.

USPS says Ground Advantage between the contiguous U.S. and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other territories carries a service expectation of 10 days or more. If you have customers there, either move them to Priority Mail or set a Ground Advantage cutoff around Monday, December 7 to be safe. You can check exact transit for any ZIP code pair with the USPS service commitments tool.
One more catch: USPS does not process refund requests for missed guaranteed delivery on Priority Mail Express to these offshore destinations (Puerto Rico excluded). Refunds for loss still apply.
International and APO/FPO/DPO shipments are where businesses get caught. These cutoffs arrive while most teams are still focused on Black Friday.

The November 4 Ground Advantage date for military addresses is two weeks from the time of writing. If you ship to service members, flag those orders in your system now. Priority Mail Express Military Service is only offered at select military and diplomatic Post Offices, so confirm availability before promising it.

USPS tells you when to hand a package over. It does not tell you when your customer has to click buy. That date is yours to set, and it is simple math:
Store cutoff = USPS ship date minus your fulfillment time minus one buffer day
Example: you fulfill in two business days and ship mostly Ground Advantage. December 17 minus two days is December 15, minus one buffer day puts your "order by" date at Monday, December 14. Then offer a paid Priority upgrade through about December 16 and Express through December 17 or 18.

Christmas Day; Post Offices closed, no regular delivery |
1. Treating the label date as the ship date. The clock starts when USPS accepts and scans the package, not when you print the label. A label created December 17 for a package first scanned December 18 has missed the Ground Advantage date. Schedule a carrier pickup or drop off before the last collection time.
2. Reading "recommended" as "guaranteed." USPS says actual delivery depends on origin, destination, acceptance time and other conditions. These dates are targets, not promises. Write your site copy the same way.
3. Forgetting offshore and military customers. Alaska, Hawaii, territories and APO addresses follow different rules. One generic "order by" banner will be wrong for them.
4. Ignoring what late packages cost after the holidays. Most shipping teams stop paying attention once the rush ends. That is exactly when the cost of late deliveries shows up on your carrier invoices, and when the window to recover it starts closing.
Peak season is when late deliveries pile up across every carrier. If you ship with USPS, Priority Mail Express is the only domestic service with a money back delivery guarantee, and the guaranteed date shows when you buy the label. Ground Advantage, First Class and Priority Mail are not guaranteed.
Most businesses don't ship with USPS alone. If you also use FedEx or UPS, late guaranteed shipments can qualify for a refund, but only if someone files the claim inside the carrier's window. Carrier guarantee terms can also change during peak season, so check them each year. During the busiest weeks of the year, almost nobody has time to track every package and file claims by hand. So the refunds go unclaimed.
ShipPlug is a shipping intelligence and cost optimization company built for businesses that ship with FedEx and UPS.
The holidays are the most expensive weeks of your shipping year. They should also be the weeks you get the most money back.
Thursday, December 17, 2026, for addresses in the lower 48 states. Shipments to Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories should go out much earlier because Ground Advantage to those areas takes 10 or more days.
Friday, December 18, 2026, for domestic addresses, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories.
Saturday, December 19, 2026, using Priority Mail Express. It is the fastest and most expensive USPS domestic option.
Wednesday, December 9 for First Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International. Wednesday, December 16 for Priority Mail Express International.
By Wednesday, November 4 for Ground Advantage, December 9 for First Class Mail and Priority Mail, and December 16 for Priority Mail Express Military Service where available.
No. They are recommended send by dates. Actual delivery depends on origin, destination and when USPS accepts the package. Only Priority Mail Express carries a domestic money back delivery guarantee.
No. Christmas is a federal holiday, so Post Offices are closed and regular mail is not delivered on December 25.
It depends on the carrier and service. FedEx and UPS guaranteed services can qualify for late delivery refunds when claims are filed on time. ShipPlug files those FedEx and UPS refund claims for you automatically.
Mark December 17 on your calendar, set your store cutoff a few days ahead of it, and get your international and military orders moving now. Then make sure the packages that still arrive late don't cost you twice.
