FedEx and UPS Late Delivery Refunds: 2026 Guide for Shippers

Can you get a refund when FedEx or UPS delivers late?

Yes. If a guaranteed FedEx or UPS shipment arrives even one minute after its delivery commitment, the shipper can request a refund or credit of the transportation charges. In 2026, the guarantee covers express and international air services only: FedEx overnight, FedEx 2Day A.M. and FedEx International Priority, plus UPS Next Day Air, UPS 2nd Day Air A.M. and UPS Worldwide Express. Ground services from both carriers are not guaranteed right now.

The catch is the clock. You generally have 15 days to file each claim, and the carriers won't flag late packages for you. For a business shipping hundreds or thousands of packages a week, that adds up to real money nobody collects.

This guide covers which services qualify in 2026, how the FedEx Money Back Guarantee and UPS Guaranteed Service Refund work, how to file a claim, and how to make late delivery refunds automatic.

How the FedEx Money Back Guarantee works in 2026

The FedEx Money Back Guarantee refunds or credits your transportation charges when a covered shipment misses its delivery commitment. As of February 12, 2026, it covers these services for U.S. payors:

  • U.S. domestic: FedEx First Overnight, FedEx Priority Overnight, FedEx Standard Overnight and FedEx 2Day A.M., plus the Extra Hours versions of the overnight services
  • International: FedEx International First, International Priority, International Priority Express, International Priority Freight and the International Priority DirectDistribution services

FedEx says the guarantee for all other services remains suspended until further notice. That includes FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery, standard FedEx 2Day and FedEx Express Saver. Watch the difference between 2Day and 2Day A.M.: only the A.M. service carries the guarantee.

A few other rules to know:

  • Deadline: request the refund within 15 calendar days of the invoice date (or the ship date if you paid by card or cash).
  • Who files: the payer of the shipping charges, usually the account holder.
  • What you get back: the eligible transportation charges, not the value of the goods.
  • Exclusions: shipments delayed by regulatory changes don't qualify, and FedEx extends some morning delivery commitments by 90 minutes during peak periods (November 23, 2026 to January 4, 2027 this season).

How UPS late delivery refunds work in 2026

UPS calls its version the UPS Service Guarantee, and the refund is often called a Guaranteed Service Refund (GSR). It is currently active for these services:

  • U.S. domestic: UPS Next Day Air Early, UPS Next Day Air, UPS Next Day Air Saver and UPS 2nd Day Air A.M.
  • International: the UPS Worldwide Express family of services, including Worldwide Express Plus and Worldwide Express Saver

UPS says the guarantee remains suspended for all other UPS shipments and services. That means UPS Ground, UPS Ground Saver, standard 2nd Day Air and 3 Day Select do not qualify for a late delivery refund right now. Also note that UPS Next Day Air Saver's guaranteed time now runs to 11:59 p.m. on the guaranteed day, so a Saver package delivered in the evening is still on time.

UPS refund requests are generally due within 15 days of the scheduled delivery date, and the refund covers shipping charges only.

How to file a FedEx or UPS late delivery refund claim

If you file claims yourself, here is the process for each late package:

  1. Find the late shipments. Compare each guaranteed package's delivery scan against its committed delivery date and time. Neither carrier flags these for you.
  2. Confirm it qualifies. Check that the service is currently guaranteed and that the delay isn't excluded (weather, a wrong address, a customs or regulatory hold, or a signature or access problem at delivery).
  3. Gather the details. You'll need the tracking number, your account number and the invoice it was billed on.
  4. Submit the request in time. For FedEx, use FedEx Billing Online or call 1.800.GoFedEx and ask for billing. For UPS, request the refund through your UPS account or Billing Center. Do it within the 15 day window.
  5. Track the credit. Confirm it posts to a future invoice, and follow up on anything denied.

That's five steps per package. Multiply that by every late overnight shipment in a busy month, and you can see why most businesses stop filing.

Why most businesses miss late delivery refunds

Carriers built the refund process for the occasional claim, not for a business shipping at volume. The usual reasons refunds go uncollected:

  • Nobody is watching delivery times. A package that shows "delivered" looks like a success, even if it arrived after its commitment.
  • The 15 day window closes fast. By the time anyone reviews last month's invoices, many claims have already expired.
  • The rules keep changing. Guarantees get suspended, reinstated and modified, sometimes with only a few weeks of notice.
  • It's tedious. Filing claims one by one is low priority work that falls to the bottom of every list.

What to watch this holiday season

Peak season is when late deliveries rise and guarantee rules shift. Last year, FedEx suspended its Money Back Guarantee on December 1, 2025, restoring U.S. domestic express coverage on January 13, 2026 and international coverage on February 12, 2026. This season, FedEx has already extended morning delivery commitments by 90 minutes from November 23, 2026 to January 4, 2027. Check each carrier's service alerts before you rely on a guarantee in December, and file every eligible claim while coverage is in place.

Late delivery refund FAQ

Does FedEx refund late deliveries?

Does UPS refund late deliveries?

Yes, for guaranteed services. The UPS Service Guarantee currently covers Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air, Next Day Air Saver, 2nd Day Air A.M. and Worldwide Express services. Requests are generally due within 15 days of the scheduled delivery date.

Is the FedEx Money Back Guarantee suspended in 2026?

Partly. FedEx restored the guarantee for U.S. domestic express services in January 2026 and international services in February 2026. It remains suspended for FedEx Ground, Home Delivery, standard 2Day, Express Saver and all other services.

Does FedEx Ground or UPS Ground have a money back guarantee?

Not right now. Both carriers have suspended the guarantee for their ground services until further notice.

How late does a package have to be to qualify for a refund?

Any amount. A guaranteed package delivered even one minute after its commitment time can qualify, unless the delay falls under an exclusion like weather, an incorrect address or a regulatory hold.

How do I get a refund from UPS for a late delivery?

Confirm the service was guaranteed and the package arrived after its commitment, then request a Guaranteed Service Refund through your UPS account or Billing Center within the claim window. Or use a service like ShipPlug to file claims automatically.

What does a late delivery refund cover?

The shipping charges for that package. It does not cover the value of the goods or any other costs the delay caused.

Yes. ShipPlug connects to your FedEx and UPS accounts in under 3 minutes, then finds late guaranteed shipments and files refund claims for you automatically. There's no upfront cost, and you only pay when you get money back.
